Updated 2012 Toyota Hilux goes on sale in NZ

The updated Toyota Hilux has just been launched in New Zealand with a brand-new variant, new features, styling updates and a colourful new ad campaign.

Toyota New Zealand General Manager of Sales and Operations, Steve Prangnell said “This is a significant change for Hilux. The improvements we have made now will further strengthen Hilux’s reign as New Zealand’s most popular light truck.”

Since the seventh-generation Hilux was released in 2005 it has been continually tweaked and updated to improve its practicality as a workhorse/family-friendly vehicle with the latest updates continuing this trend.

Mr Prangnell said “Toyota engineers have travelled around the world to learn about how Hilux is used, in order to develop ways to address the changing demands of our customers. While in New Zealand, they drove our farm tracks, spoke to customers, and then formulated ways to make Hilux even better suited to our unique conditions.”

The new model has been added to the Hilux range is a standard grade 4WD extra cab ute with a 3.0 litre turbo diesel engine and a five-speed manual transmission.

In terms of design, the entire front end of the Hilux is new, with a newly designed bumper, grille, headlights, bonnet and wheel guards.

Inside, the 2012 Hilux has a fresh new instrument panel layout, brand new audio units and for SR5 models, climate controlled air conditioning and a touch-screen audio unit.

Side and curtain shield airbags are standard for all 4WD models, while Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is now standard for all Hilux 4WD double cab and double cab SR5 models.

Upgraded audio systems are fitted to all models, giving customers access to advanced Bluetooth connectivity as well as MP3 player input. Hilux SR5 models add a 6.1” touch screen audio unit with features such as album cover art display and reverse camera compatibility.

Toyota NZ – Hilux model specification overview

2WD

Hilux 2WD models with the 2.7 litre petrol engine deliver 116kW of power and 240Nm of torque. Driver and passenger front airbags and an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) are standard. They have 15 inch steel wheels, a black front bumper, grille and outside mirrors. Inside, there is air conditioning, hard wearing vinyl seats, urethane gear lever and steering wheel, and a tachometer. The two-speaker audio unit has a single CD player, USB and AUX input, Bluetooth phone and audio compatibility and voice control. Front power windows and central door locking are standard. Front personal lights with a storage box are available for the double cab.

The 2WD Diesel Single Cab Cab/Chassis model has a 3.0 litre turbo-diesel engine delivering 126kW and 343Nm. Inside, fabric seats replace vinyl.

The Extra Cab model adds separated front seats with seatback pockets, a body coloured front bumper, chrome front grille surround and variable intermittent front wipers.

The Double Cab diesel model adds cruise control and remote door locking.

4WD

The Hilux 4WD Single Cab Cab/Chassis has a 3.0 litre turbo-diesel engine with 126kW of power and 343Nm of torque. Driver and passenger front, side and curtain shield airbags and an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) are standard. It has 16 inch steel wheels, a black front bumper, grille and outside mirrors. Inside, there are sports style front seats with fabric upholstery, air conditioning, and a tachometer. The two-speaker audio unit has a single CD player, USB and AUX inputs, Bluetooth phone and audio compatibility and voice control. Power windows and central door locking are standard.

The Extra Cab Cab/Chassis and Ute models adds a body coloured front bumper, chrome grille surround, variable intermittent front wipers and front personal lights with a storage box.

The Double Cab Ute adds Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Automatic Disconnecting Differential (ADD), 17” steel wheels, cruise control, dash light dimmer, optitron instruments, remote door locking and body coloured over-fenders.

4WD SR5 models add alloy wheels (15” for Extra Cab, 17” for Double Cab), leather steering wheel with Bluetooth controls, leather gear lever, climate controlled air conditioning, upgraded audio with 6.1” touch screen display, driver’s seat height adjustment, 12V accessory power socket, carpet floor covering, a comprehensive multi-information display, chrome plated outside mirrors with indicator lights, chrome exterior door handles, front fog lights, rear privacy glass and auto on/off headlights.

Key specification changes

2WD

  • Air conditioning added for single cab models, making it standard across the Hilux range
  • Diesel single cab front bumper changed to black (now all 2.7L models and s/c are black bumper)
  • Tachometer added for 2.7L models (now standard for all)
  • Audio switches added to steering wheel for 2.7L models (now standard for all 2WD)
  • Power outside mirrors added for 2.7L models (now standard for all 2WD)
  • Overhead console with front personal lamps and storage compartment added for extra and double cab models
  • Cruise control added for diesel double cab (2WD only)

4WD

  • Single cab front bumper material and windscreen wiper functions changed.
  • Side and curtain shield airbags, sports style front seats, upgraded seat material and door trims and driver’s assist grip added for all single and extra cab variants (now standard across the 4WD line-up)
  • Single cab seating comfort improved and centre console storage box added.
  • Overhead console with front personal lamps and storage compartment added for all extra and double cab versions.
  • Cruise control added for double cab manual (now standard for all double cab models and extra cab SR5)
  • Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) added for standard grade double cab models (includes Traction Control (TRC), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), larger brakes, 17” steel wheels, and body coloured over-fenders.
  • SR5 models add: light control system with auto on/off headlights, steering wheel mounted Bluetooth controls, climate control air conditioning, two additional speakers, leather gear lever, side indicators on outside mirrors, touch-screen display audio system.
