McLaren Automotive makes everything ‘official’ (+video)

McLaren Automotive has officially launched as a proper automaker. Since 1966 McLaren (founded by Kiwi, Bruce McLaren) has won 25% of all the races it has entered in Formula 1, and has been an innovator in racing car and road car design.
McLaren’s aspirations are to produce a car better than the European automakers of Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini and it would focus not just out speed and agility, but efficiency as well.
McLaren’s F1 experience and equipment means it can produce the carbon-fibre-tubbed cars very efficiently within fine tolerances, and with a huge emphasis on keeping mass down to a minimum, the MP4-12C is only 1300kg. This is 300kg more than the McLaren F1, but the MP4-12C has much more equipment, such as airbags.
The engine is built by McLaren – a twin-turbo V8 with 600hp that revs to 8000rpm – and there’s a fancy gearbox called Pre-Cog that prepares the gearbox for the next gear.
Production will remain in the UK and McLaren expects 300 jobs to be created as it ramps up to delivering 1000 cars per year in 2011 and 4000 cars per year in 2015 (which will include new models).
