2012 XK – more luxury, greater performance

Jaguar’s coupe, the XK has a higher luxury specification for 2012 and sees the introduction of a new range topping XKR-S with formidable performance for a Grand Tourer coupe and convertible.

Coupled with a decrease in price the XK, now comes in Portfolio specification with new luxury soft grain leather upholstery, heated and cooled seats, heated steering wheel, a suede headlining and an 8 speaker Bowers and Wilkins 525 watts sound system as new standard features over the previous model.

The latest XK, in all its derivations, is easily recognisable with its thinner Xenon headlights and LED running lights and turn signals. There is a larger grille and new front bumper.

And each model is distinguishable from its siblings. The chrome mesh grille on the XK is replaced by matt black detailing on the XKR, while the XKR-S gets a different front bumper to provide greater aerodynamic down force commensurate with its high speed ability.

The side power vents are now more horizontal with a mesh insert. At the rear the boot lid has a slimmer chrome finisher with an embedded Jaguar “leaper”.

There are five new paints in the 17 colour range and the choice of 11 different alloy wheels from 19 to 20 inches in diameter.

The Portfolio coupe and convertible models are available for $175,000 and $190,000 respectively and apart from the new features detailed above have adaptive dynamic suspension, sequential shift with steering column paddles of the six speed automatic transmission behind the 283 kWs five litre V8.

There are front and rear parking aids, keyless entry and start, 7 inch touch screen, satellite navigation and ipod connectivity.

The XKR comes with a supercharged version of the V8 motor producing 375 kWs and 625 Nm of torque. Added features include an active differential, ‘R’ performance brakes, quad tail pipes and the ‘R’ exterior.

It will sell for $195,000 and $210,000 for coupe and convertible respectively.

The range topping XKR-S has been awarded ‘2011 Sports Car of the Year’ by the respected German motoring magazine, Auto Bild Sportscars, following a poll of more than 70,000 of its readers.

Its 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine produces 412 kWs and 680Nm, enabling it to sprint to 100 km/h in just 4.4-seconds before going on to reach an electronically limited top speed of 300km/h. To ensure minimal lift and maximum stability at such high speeds the XKR-S has a bespoke aerodynamic pack, which includes a rear carbon fibre wing and front splitter.

It epitomises the attributes key to all Jaguar’s GT cars: explosive power, inspiring handling, relaxed comfort and discrete luxury.

The XKR-S Convertible was also recently revealed at the Los Angeles Auto show. It boasts the same performance credentials as the Coupe, including suspension and electronics changes designed to increase both agility and driver reward.

It has its own unique active exhaust system to produce a distinctively different symphony from the other XK models. Like all XKs, the XKR-S is based on an aluminium body which provides weight saving while still creating the stiffest platform in its class to provide Jaguar’s superb compromise between refinement, comfort and handling.

The XKR-S coupe and convertible are available to specific order at $260,000 and $275,000 respectively.

“Like the XK, Jaguar’s luxury sedan, the XJ also provides greater value for New Zealand customers in 2012.” says Paul Ricketts, Brand Manager for Jaguar New Zealand. The XJ range starts at $155,000 for the heavily specified 600Nm, three litre twin turbo diesel V6 model. Four other models have a choice of naturally aspirated or supercharged five litre V8s and six speed automatic power trains.

All have weight saving all aluminium body shells for better economy, superior agility and sparkling performance befitting Jaguar’s beautiful, fast cars persona.

A new rear seat comfort package is available with electrically controlled recline, lumbar and massage functions.

The naturally aspirated five litre XJ V8 with 283 kWs and 515 Nm of torque in Premium Luxury and Portfolio models starts from $180,000, while the supercharged Portfolio (346 kWs) is $240,000 and the top specification Supersport (375 kWs) is $285,000.

The Cat Came Back

It’s strange how things never seem to work out entirely as you anticipate. After my last tirade about the social inadequacy of the proletariat I was expecting to be the recipient of at least a smattering of bile and vitriol from the bus dwelling community, but it seems that in general the world agrees with me. Or at least it doesn’t find my viewpoint objectionable enough to justify a major counter-strike.

Instead the response from the select few of my acquaintances who happen to peruse my weekly ramblings was focussed on one specific sentence. The bit where I casually proclaimed my least favourite car of all time to be the Jaguar X-Type.

It turns out that along with Olympic whinging abilities and an inability to play expansive rugby; most Kiwis’ believe that a passionate devotion to all things Jag is a deep seated trait of those of us from the motherland. And they are absolutely correct.

Throughout its history, Jaguar has been about making truly great cars that have been accessible to the common man. Not too accessible of course, but not in the airy realms of fantasy that seem to be the reserve of other motoring exotica. If you worked hard in life and didn’t fritter too much of your life savings away on other frivolous wastes such as children, then at some point you would accrue enough coinage to join the big cat club of motoring pleasure.

But with the X-Type they took a sharp and unpleasant diversion from this tried and trusted theory and instead decided to make a truly great badge accessible to the common man. Although at this point I must point out that the X-Type was in no way a bad car. Updated 2012 Jaguar range and XKR-S coming to NZ

Jaguar has introduced upgrades across its range of 2012 models at the recent New York Motor Show and the updated machines will be available in NZ by the end of the year.

The XF sports sedan has received powertrain updates to improve performance and economy. There is also a new interior look and exterior design. The XJ luxury sedan now has a Rear Seat Comfort package offering a limousine experience. The new 300km/h XKR-S now tops the XK range.

“Substantial changes and improvements have been made across the XF, XJ and XK ranges bringing performance, refinement and economy to new levels” says Paul Ricketts, Brand Manager of Jaguar New Zealand “While fresh design enhancements strengthen the appeal of Jaguar’s latest line-up.” said Mr Ricketts.

The XF, now receives new front and rear revisions to its appearance that bring it in line with the flagship XJ. According to recent reports Jaguar is busy developing a new, smaller sports car designed to take on Porsche’s Boxster convertible and its hardtop Cayman sibling.

The new model is expected to be produced in roadster and coupe form and has been named the XE by the motoring press.

Slotting into the Jaguar line-up beneath the XK coupe and convertible, the smaller XE is thought to be an important component in a overall product plan that would see Jaguar building more than 100,000 cars a year by 2015.

It will feature an all-new aluminum platform that will eventually form the basis of the next-generation XK, XF and even the XJ through 2015 and beyond. It will reportedly be a common aluminum matrix, housing the engine up front with power sent to the rear wheels.

In regards to the XE’s powertrain expect to see a gasoline naturally-aspirated V6 producing around 205kW. A supercharged version kicking out 260kW is also suggested as a range-topping variant.

All details of the XE remain unconfirmed as Jaguar is still exploring the production viability of the new entry-level sportscar. If it does go ahead 2013 is the earliest possible launch date.

Five litre V8 added to Jaguar XF range

Two new five litre direct injection V8 engines have been added to the 2010 model Jaguar XF range for the NZ market. These engines in the 5.0V8 and XFR models produce more performance with the same economy and two percent less emissions than the 4.2 litre V8 they replace.

The 5.0V8 model produces 283 kWs and 515 Nm of torque, while the supercharged XFR has 375 kWs and 625 Nm. They will sell for $159,990 and $209,990 respectively.

The new XFR is the first XF to carry the R badge, which defines Jaguar’s most performance focused cars. The XFR has had a 23 percent power hike, while torque is up 12 percent and with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.9 seconds. The naturally aspirated 5.0V8 has gained 29 percent more power and 25 percent more torque. Both V8s meet Euro5 emission regulations which are not mandatory until 2011.

The XFR has a sixth generation twin vortex supercharger, while the central spray direct fuel injection increases efficiency and torque. Variable camshaft timing improves throttle response and efficiency and a variable geometry inlet manifold on the naturally aspirated engine increases low and high end torque.

The new XFR has the active differential control and adaptive dynamics suspension previously only available in the top models of the XK and XJ range. The active differential is electronically controlled to vary its locking torque to each wheel depending on surface conditions and the amount of power applied to optimise traction. The adaptive dynamics suspension automatically adjusts the damper settings to suit road conditions and the way the car is driven, optimising the balance between ride comfort and handling and road holding. Both V8s have variable ratio speed sensitive power steering.

The six speed automatic has been given additional clutch plates and an uprated torque converter to handle the XFR’s added zest. The 2010 XFR is distinguished by 20 inch alloy wheels, revised bumpers and lower front air intakes, sill extensions, bonnet louvres and grille, four tailpipes and a boot lid spoiler.

The XFR’s front brakes at 380 mm diameter are the largest ever fitted to a Jaguar and come with ABS, EBD, EBA and cornering brake control.

Inside there are more unique details with soft grain leather and a dark oak veneer in the wood trimmed areas to complement the XFR specific dark aluminium mesh finish. Fourteen way adjustable sports seats include adjustable squab bolsters.

There is a keyless entry with the smart key system, automatic climate control, trip computer and split folding rear seats. The V8 has a 320 watts, eight speaker sound system, while the XFR comes with a 440 watts Bowers & Wilkins 13 speaker system.

The same new five litre V8 engine options are also fitted to the 2010 XK and XKR coupe and convertible models.

The XK has similar comprehensive specification and equipment to the V8 engined XFs. The XK pricing starts from $229,990 for the V8 Coupe, with the flagship XKR convertible tagged at $274,990.

The XFR and all the XK models will only be available to customer factory forward order. The XF 5.0 V8 and other XF models will be available as Jaguar dealer stock items.
