High-spec Suzuki Swift RS added to NZ range

September 13th, 2011 by Darren Cottingham

Suzuki NZ has added a new highly-specified Swift to its model range – the Swift RS. Billed as a limited edition variant the RS receives extra luxury and equipment.

The RS version is based on the Swift five-door hatchback and is the first special edition since the arrival of the new generation series earlier this year. With its higher level of standard equipment, the RS is the most equipped Swift ever sold in New Zealand.

Extra features include a tilt and telescopic adjustable steering column, keyless locking and the push button start/stop function which is inherited from the Suzuki Kizashi sedan. There’s also a full climate control system with a digital readout replacing standard air conditioning on other Swifts, and the RS has Bluetooth hands-free mobile telephone connection. A six-speaker audio system includes a USB input for MP3 or iPod music player functions, and can be controlled by switches on the steering wheel.

Mechanically, the RS benefits from four wheel disc brakes, previously only available on the high performance Swift Sport model. The new 1.4-litre K14B four-cylinder engine introduced for the latest generation Swift is retained for the RS version. This powerplant produces 70 kW of power while averaging 5.5 litres/100 km in the combined fuel cycle, or 6.2 litres/100 km for the automatic. Jaguar unveils stunning C-X16 sports car concept (+video)

September 8th, 2011 by Darren Cottingham

Jaguar has revealed its latest concept car, the C-X16 before it makes an official debut at next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The concept is already touted as being a likely future production model that will sit below the XK in Jaguar’s current line up. The concept may eventually spawn Jag’s affordable two-seater sports car that will fight Porsche’s Cayman and 911.

Built to be a true driver’s sports car, the C-X16 is the smallest Jaguar in terms of length since the 1954 XK120. The concept rolls on a shortened platform of the next generation XK’s aluminium chassis structure and has a perfect 50:50 weight distribution between its axles.

Under its traditionally long bonnet the C-X16 packs a hybrid powertrain that includes a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine with 280kW of power and 450 Nm of torque. The conventional engine works in with an electric motor generator integrated into the eight-speed automatic gearbox that transfers power to the rear wheels. The price of the 116i manual, featuring an entirely new 1.6 litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, will start from $46,600 drive-away. The new base-model boasts the same power output of the previous entry model, the 118i, despite using 24 per cent less fuel (5.7 litres/100km).

Peugeot HX1 crossover concept revealed before Frankfurt debut

August 30th, 2011 by Darren Cottingham

Peugeot has revealed the striking lines of its latest concept car – the HX1 before it officially debuts at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Peugeot claims the concept marks the future of crossover vehicles and can seat up to six adults.

The HX1 is certainly low-slung, it measures 4.95 metres long, 1.99 high and has a height of just 1.37 metres. Coefficient drag is a very low 0.28, making the HX1 very advanced in terms of aerodynamics. Achieving this figure is helped by clever tech in the side skirting and spoilers and also wheel blades that open up to form a flat surface.

Other tricks include five rear-hinged half-scissor doors and trick seating which can create a centre row by a set of pull out buckets integrated into the front seats.

Powering the HX1 is an all-wheel drive diesel-electric motor with a 2.2 litre HDI unit for a combined output of 220kW. The HX1 can travel up to 30km in full electric mode and has an economy rating of just 3.2-litres/100km. Continue reading “Peugeot HX1 crossover concept revealed before Frankfurt debut” »

Toyota NZ reveals 2012 Camry range

August 29th, 2011 by Darren Cottingham

Toyota has revealed the all-new seventh generation Camry.  The New Zealand Camry range will feature three models including two new unique model variants named Atara.

The new Toyota Camry debuts a refreshed design with more interior space, retuned driving dynamics and a quieter ride.  Every exterior body panel on Camry is new.

A new 2.5 litre four-cylinder petrol engine delivers a 10 per cent increase in power and better fuel economy than the current model’s 2.4 litre petrol engine. The 2012 Camry will now be fitted with a six speed automatic transmission – replacing the current generation’s five-speed gearbox.

Toyota New Zealand General Manager of Sales and Operations, Steve Prangnell said “The new Camry, Atara and a new Camry Hybrid will arrive together in New Zealand dealerships in March 2012.” Continue reading “Toyota NZ reveals 2012 Camry range” »

2012 Porsche 911 gets officially revealed

August 24th, 2011 by Darren Cottingham

After plenty of rumours, spy shots and leaked photos, Porsche has officially unveiled it’s 2012 911 (991) model.

While it may look very similar the new 911 has grown, with a wheelbase 100 mm longer than it’s predecessor. It also has a wider track at the front and a body made of aluminum-steel for reduced weight and greater rigidity. Standard wheel fittment is 20-inch rims and the side mirrors have moved to the top of the doors.

In the cockpit the reworked interior combines elements of the Porsche Panamera with the outgoing 997 model. The major changes here include a more pronounced, downward sloping centre console and entirely new switchgear.

The official word on power figures pegs the 3.4 litre boxer engine in the entry-level Carerra at 257kW. The higher-spec Carrera S uses a 3.8-litre motor that’s good for 294kW. Torque figures haven’t been released. Continue reading “2012 Porsche 911 gets officially revealed” »

VW drops covers off production model Up!

August 23rd, 2011 by Darren Cottingham

Volkswagen has just given the motoring world the low down on its up! The up! is VW’s new compact city car and will become the brand’s entry-level machine in many global markets.

As you’d expect the up! is a very small machine being just 3.54 metres long, 1.64 m wide and 1.48 m tall with a wheelbase of 2.42 m. There’s 251 litres cargo capacity in the hatch expanding to an impressive 951 litres with the rear seats folded down.

Under the bonnet there will be two variants of VW’s three-cylinder, 1.0 litre petrol engine with BlueMotion technology. Power output will be either 44kW or 55kW respectively. Economy is extremely frugal at just 4.2 litres/100km and 4.3 liters/100 km, depending on power grade.

A special feature of the up! will be optional City Emergency Braking – a safety system that works at speeds under 30 km/h, detects an imminent collision and apply the brakes automatically. Continue reading “VW drops covers off production model Up!” »
