AMG ready to create smaller V8 coupe

After a recent news conference it’s become clear that Mercedes-Benz performance arm AMG is considering a smaller V8 coupe to rival the Porsche 911.
Speaking at the launch of the SLS AMG in California, AMG executives have confirmed plans to increase the brand’s standalone offerings in coming years.
Apparently, AMG has yet to take a proposal to Mercedes-Benz, but internal discussions have the business moving toward a more compact, more affordable model as the first follow-up to the highly exclusive SLS AMG. The new model would be built on a shortened version of the SLS chassis, and make use of the same front/mid-mounted V8-engined layout.
A new V8 engine will be used, with a capacity of around 5.8 to 6.2 litres and should feature new technologies such as direct injection and cylinder cut-off systems for greater efficiency at cruising speeds.
For now, AMG must wait and see how its first standalone model, the SLS AMG, sells in the current market.
AMG is also expected to reveal a convertible version of the SLS AMG Gullwing before Christmas, and a GT racer is scheduled to hit tracks in 2011.
Mercedes SLS AMG Panamerica revealed

Gullwing-America has just unveiled its Mercedes SLS AMG Panamericana bodykit which aims to further bring back the retro look of the original Gullwing 300SL. Some of the key design elements that transform the Mercedes SLS AMG Panamericana into the Gullwing of the 21st century include a clean front radiator grille and vents on the bonnet and fenders.
The new SLS AMG aerodynamics package includes seven parts made from Hybrid Aluminum and carbon fibre. The Mercedes SLS AMG Panamericana program also includes 2 side vents, chrome details such as the grille frame and new oval dual Xenon headlights. The car sits on 19 and 20 inch rims and is fitted with a new, sport tuned muffler.
The interior of the Mercedes SLS AMG Panamericana is almost standard, except for the Alcantara centre piece in the seats and some brushed Aluminum door sills.
The SLS AMG Panamericana also offers the option of the classic racing stripes on the front fenders. Pricing and availability will be announced at a later date, but the company says it will be manufactured in Germany.

Hamann Mercedes G55 AMG Supercharged

Aftermarket tuner Hamann has decided the 500+ hp of the standard Mercedes G55 AMG just isn’t enough and something needed to be done. The result is 600hp (441 kW) and 782 Nm of torque between 3,000 and 5,200 rpm.
The extra grunt of the Hamann Mercedes G55 AMG Supercharged comes in part from a 25kW upgrade of the ECU and the tuner’s HM 600 power pack. This power pack features a new belt pulley kit, metal catalysts, 6-pipe sport end silencers, a gear oil cooling system and an optimised gear control.
The results of all this engine work are impressive the Hamann Mercedes G55 AMG Supercharged can reach 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds and has a top speed of 261 km/h. Not bad for a brick on wheels.
Visually, the Hamann Mercedes G55 AMG Supercharged comes with a new aerodynamics kit and a revised interior.

Edo Competition works over Mercedes C63 AMG

We are used to seeing highest-level cars like the Ferrari Enzo and Maserati MC12 go through edo competition’s tuning process, but it’s irregular to see a sedan like the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG receive full edo treatment. But the German tuner clearly recognised potential left in the C63’s 6.2L AMG V8. According to Edo’s press release, “457 horsepower and 442 ft-lb are not enough.”
To upgrade the C63 AMG toward supercar status, edo competition has replaced the full exhaust system, including headers and high-flow cats, new air filters, and a recalibrated ECU. The changes increase output to 555 horsepower and 501 ft-lb torque. Edo claims the AMG now sprints to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 320 kph.
Exterior modifications are minimal with 19-inch wheels and tyres, but edo says that it’s open to customers’ own customisation requests.

Mercedes to build electric SLS AMG gullwing

Mercedes-Benz has officially confirmed recent rumors and stated that it will build an electrically powered version of the upcoming SLS AMG gullwing Coupe. The electric version of the SLS will be four-wheel-drive and be powered by an individual motor for each wheel. It won’t be using wheel hub motors, instead the motors will be mounted just inboard of the suspension components.
Energy will be sourced from a 48 kWh liquid cooled lithium ion battery pack located in the car’s central tunnel. Total output for the electric drive system is 392 kW (526 hp) and 880 Nm (649 lb-ft), which compares favourably to 420 kW (563 hp) and 649 Nm (479 lb-ft) for the conventional petrol-powered 6.3-liter V8. Mercedes claims it will accelerate to 100 kph in just four seconds. No range is being quoted yet and neither is a release date but rumors place it at around 2015.
After the announcement of the electric SLS AMG, Daimler’s $50 million investment in Tesla makes a lot more sense with Tesla’s ability to move quickly and develop systems faster than could be done at Daimler.
