The updated Toyota Hilux has just been launched in New Zealand with a brand-new variant, new features, styling updates and a colourful new ad campaign.
Toyota New Zealand General Manager of Sales and Operations, Steve Prangnell said “This is a significant change for Hilux. The improvements we have made now will further strengthen Hilux’s reign as New Zealand’s most popular light truck.”
Since the seventh-generation Hilux was released in 2005 it has been continually tweaked and updated to improve its practicality as a workhorse/family-friendly vehicle with the latest updates continuing this trend.
Mr Prangnell said “Toyota engineers have travelled around the world to learn about how Hilux is used, in order to develop ways to address the changing demands of our customers. While in New Zealand, they drove our farm tracks, spoke to customers, and then formulated ways to make Hilux even better suited to our unique conditions.”
The new model has been added to the Hilux range is a standard grade 4WD extra cab ute with a 3.0 litre turbo diesel engine and a five-speed manual transmission. Read the rest of this entry »

The Prius family of vehicles has grown recently and what was once a single model now includes a plug-in hybrid model and the Prius V minivan. The new models are set to go on sale in the States from next month and Toyota has revealed a new ad campaign to sell the range. The only problem is that the first TV commercial is really bizzare.
Aptly named “People Person” this new campaign was created by ‘hit and miss’ advertising agency, Saatchi & Saatchi
The ad follows a bunch of people who are linked together to from a gigantic but correctly proportioned man. This people-man goes about his regular day like brushing his teeth and reading the newspaper. Then the giant leaves the house and uncovers four Prius models, including the regular Prius, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, the Prius V and the upcoming compact Prius (still in concept form), all parked on his driveway. The annual superbowl sporting event in the States is big business and not just on the football field. Superbowl advertising has become staunchly competitive and crazy expensive, with juggernaut companies all pushing for TV viewers attention and ultimately spending dollars. Among these advertisers the car companies use the Superbowl as a time to show off their latest wares and show Americans what they are all about.
When the Superbowl took place last weekend it was the Green Bay Packers that won the game but Chrysler and Eminem that scored big in the advertising war. Chrysler’s ad cost around $10 million USD to create and stars Eminem among scenes of his hometown – Detroit. It plays up to patriotism and emotion while also introducing a new and risky new tagline for Chrsyler – “Imported from Detroit”. Named ‘Born of Fire’ the ad is for the Chrysler 200 sedan but has generated more interest and comment than any other this year, making it a total success.

Here at Car and SUV we are already big fans of the 2011 WRX STI, that won’t surprise you much. But what may surprise you is that Subaru seems to be a big fan of 80′s pop band A-Ha and their old school video for Take On Me.
How do we know? Well, we’ve seen a new ad for the sporty Japanese sedan that shows the car taking on a robot spider drawn in a familiar sketchbook form. The ad labels the WRX STI as “pure performance”, and the 227kW turbocharged boxer and symmetrical all-wheel drive system do clearly appear useful in fleeing the grips of a fictional mechanical spider.

Mini has kicked off its advertising campaign for the new Countryman crossover with a suitably hyperactive TV commercial. In this new ad the Countryman is placed into an Italian countryside/city setting where it multiplies into a frightening fleet of over one hundred CG vehicles, all jumping up curbs and having near-misses with pedestrians in what is a Mini dominated world. Eventually, the high-riding Countryman throws itself onto a ferry and escapes into the sunset, much to the delight to all concerned.

Korean car maker Kia has been working overtime on generating street cred recently. Firstly, there was a American commercial for the strangely-shaped Kia Soul that featured hip hop hamsters singing a classic Black Sheep track called “The Choice is Yours,”. Now, Kia Australia has followed up with some more old school hip hop in an advertising campaign for the new Kia Sportage. While the SUV vehicle isn’t too exciting in terms of performance the 1982 early-rap classic song “The Message” by Grandmaster Melle Mel & The Furious Five makes the commercial something special.
Instead of rocking some overplayed rodents, the ad folks across the ditch have put the original Grandmaster and Scorpio in the car with a suburbanite dad who lip syncs along with the forefathers of rap.
