The Mercedes-Benz C-Class maintains an important position in the German automakers range. Before the A-Class was introduced in 1997 it was the company’s entry-point model and had a tough job offering the same exclusivity and advanced technology as its more expensive siblings. In 2007 the third generation C-Class was released with improved dynamics and bold new design. It went on to become a desirable sales success. Now for 2011 Mercedes has put its compact sedan under the knife for a mid-life facelift. This is no token gesture either; the updates include design and bodywork tweaks, new powertrain technology and safety features. In total there’s been around 2,000 changes to the new C-Class over its predecessor. So, has the facelift made this popular baby-Benz even better? Car and SUV spent a week rolling in the diesel-powered C250 to find out.
There aren’t that many design tweaks but they are highly effective in sharpening up the C-Class sedan aesthetic and visually aligning it with the current E- and S-Class models. There’s a new aluminum bonnet, which saves 10kg in weight and re-profiled front and rear bumpers. Both the headlights and taillights have been restyled and there’s new LED daytime running lamps dissecting the lower air inlets. The front grille has been changed to a sportier three-bar job with a prominent three-pointed star badge. Along the flanks little has changed but our test subject looked smart with chrome trim bordering the window line. At the rear, there’s more chrome highlights and the tail lamps use LED lighting for a distinctive glow at night. Hybrids powertrains are becoming common in all types of vehicles these days – race cars, supercars, luxury cruisers, the applications now seem endless. But the next-gen Mercedes-Benz C-Class will be really pushing hybrid power to the masses according to recent reports.
Company sources have let slip that the next-generation of C-Class, due in late 2013, will feature hybrid drivetrains in almost every model. The only cars that will escape hybrid treatment won’t be the top-spec models but the smallest-displacement diesel-powered cars, which will already achieve excellent fuel economy. With fuel consumption being the major reason for this shift.
Getting emissions down and fuel economy has become vital for almost every manufacturer recently, and even luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz are no exception. Although it seems extreme to make all, or nearly all, of its highest-volume selling cars have hybrid drivetrains it would have a huge impact on the company’s overall fleet rating. It could also have a positive effect on how the brand is perceived.

Daimler has just released images and details of its 2010 Mercedes C Class. The new model range will now offer the Mercedes C250 CGI BlueEfficiency equipped with a direct injected 1.8-liter turbo engine matched to an automatic gearbox. The new model is set to replace the C230 and will output 204 hp and 310 Nm of torque. The Mercedes C250 CGI has a top speed of 240 km/h and will do the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 7.4 seconds.
The 2010 Mercedes C Class range will also include the C220 CDI equipped with an Engine of the Year winning motor which offers a 4.8 l/100 km fuel economy. Different body shapes and larger capacity models are also being offered with the C180 saloon and Station Wagon and the Mercedes C300 and C350 CDI.
