Let’s say we’re all Transformers robots for a minute. When you’re no in robot form, you’d want to transform into something pretty cool, like a jet plane or a big truck. That’s why the character Bumblebee from the Transformers film franchise morphs into a pre-production Chevy Camaro. Keen American fans are then put on to the Camaro Bumblebee special edition car, which looks just like the one in the movie.
But not everyone can afford a brand new Camaro, most people have a more limited budget and they can’t afford to play ‘Transformers’ every day on the way to work. But in China that has just changed with the release of the Chevrolet Cruze Bumblebee Edition. Sure, it’s not a Camaro and sure, there isn’t actually a Transformer in the movie that doubles as a Cruze but you can still pretend. Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon is the new installment in the Transformers film franchise and is due on the big screen in NZ very soon. The movie will be a familiar formula with large scale action scenes, some eye candy and shameless product placement of General Motors’ vehicles.
Perhaps the most famous of these superstar movie vehicles is the yellow Chevrolet Camaro that goes by the name stage name Bumblebee. As in the previous movies this banana-and-black Autobot is fashioned in a form that will be repeated as a special edition Camaro available to fans.
The road-going version is called the 2012 Transformers Special Edition Camaro, and keen American fans can order one from next month. The Transformers Camaro has special kit like Autobot badges on the guards, thick black stripes running along the roof and bonnet, a unique rear spoiler and blacked-out 20-inch alloys with Autobot-logo center caps. If that’s not enough to get everyone staring at you, American car dealers can also offer upgrades like a ground-effects lighting package and larger 21-inch alloys. Later this month, Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon will be reaching movie screens here in NZ with some fine metal on display.
In Transformers 3, like the first two movies, General Motors will have a large amount of product placement. Cars and Trucks, Autobots and Decepticons, GM has been smart with the Transformers movies and is already promoting the tie-in with a new ad showing the Bumblebee edition Chevy Camaro in action.
While a standard Bumblebee Camaro probably won’t be able to save you from huge angry robots it’s a pretty slick ride. Check out the new American ad below to see the shape-shifting Camaro in action. Also if you have a keen eye you can spot a speedster version of the 50th Anniversary Corvette Stingray concept. Chevrolet is using this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed event in the UK to unveil the right-hand drive Chevrolet Camaro. The iconic musclecar is scheduled to begin sales in the UK market sometime during the first six months of 2011.
The example to be shown off to the Goodwood crowd will be powered by the 426-horsepower (318 kW) 6.2-litre V8 LS3 engine, shared with the US-spec car, which rpoduces up to 420 ft-lb (569 Nm) of torque. UK customers will not initally be given access to the 400-horsepower 6.2-litre L99 V8 that comes with Active Fuel Management, allowing it to use only four of eight cylinders to save on petrol.
The engine will most likely come mated to the same Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission available in the States. This will help the car reach 100 kph in 4.6 seconds, but Chevy is only confirming that the U.K. spec car will have a sub-five second 0-100kph sprint, and an electronically-limited top speed of 250 kph.
Chevy is bringing a Transformers-themed version to Goodwood, in full Bumblebee kit, complete with gimmicky Autobot badging. Confirmed specs and pricing will be made available closer to the UK Camaro’s launch next year.
