Audi 2015 RS3 Sportback review

November 12th, 2015 by Robert Barry

If ever there was a car that brought back the spirit of the burbly, noisy, character-filled five-cylinder Audi Quattro coupe from the 1980s, it is the new 2015 RS3 Sportback.

The classic Audi soundtrack of the 1-2-4-5-3 five-cylinder ignition sequence has returned in the 270kW/465Nm 2.5-litre petrol turbocharged engine found under the bonnet of the RS3. Continue reading “Audi 2015 RS3 Sportback review” »

Audi: 2015 Q7 V6 TDI Quattro S-Line

October 15th, 2015 by Robert Barry

Audi has pulled off a master stoke with the new Q7 because here is an all-new model that is some 300kg lighter in weight than its predecessor, and yet it boasts more features and more technology as standard equipment than many others in the segment.

It’s one reason the Q7 made the list of top ten finalists for the New Zealand Car of the Year Award to be announced in December. The list of standard driver assistance features is quite impressive. Continue reading “Audi: 2015 Q7 V6 TDI Quattro S-Line” »

Audi 2015 A3 Sportback e-tron review

June 11th, 2015 by Darren Cottingham

This is the Age of e-tron, to bastardise a movie title. It is Audi’s play into the plug-in hybrid market and it has taken an age for them to bring a car with electric power to New Zealand. Part of the reason is that the real-world fuel economy of a modern diesel can match hybrids if they’re driven over longer distances, but the Audi A3 is more aimed at people that don’t travel that far each day. And, while you can get a diesel A3 in Europe, Audi doesn’t bring it to New Zealand because it would mean too many options for our smaller market. Audi: 2015 TT Coupe S Line review

March 12th, 2015 by Darren Cottingham

When I did judo as a kid we were taught techniques after being thrown that would make it difficult for your opponent to turn you onto your back to avoid osaekomi waza, or pinning techniques. You made yourself low and wide to hug the mat, and adjusted your bodyweight to stay flat. This is what the Audi TT feels like to drive. It feels as if you wouldn’t be able to turn it over to expose the soft underbelly. Around the corners its grappling technique with the tarmac is black belt, sports car quality. Audi: 2015 S1 Sportback review

February 6th, 2015 by Robert Barry

The term pocket rocket has been applied to many small hot hatches, but none have been more deserving of the title than the new Audi S1 Sportback.

Here is a compact turbocharged four-cylinder 2-litre all-wheel-drive city hatchback with a six-speed manual transmission that will accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. Continue reading “Audi: 2015 S1 Sportback review” »

Audi: 2014 A3 1.8 TFSI Cabriolet review

September 24th, 2014 by Richard Edwards

Spring in Auckland is quite the mixed bag weatherwise. One day, driving wind and rain, the next driving wind and rain, and so on. But occasionally you get a stunner, and I was lucky to get that – for just one day – while the new A3 was parked in the Car and SUV driveway.

The best thing that has happened to the A3 cabriolet over the old model is the introduction of another model to the range – the sedan. Having that pen-work already done means Audi was able to make the car look and function more like its almost-iconic A4 cabriolet – and now that model is gone bridge the gap to the A5 drop-top. Audi: 2014 A3 1.8T Sport sedan review

June 11th, 2014 by Darren Cottingham

audi-s3-sedan-2014-frontYou’d think that getting out of a 221kW Audi S3 and straight into a 132kW A3 might be a bit of a let-down, but it actually wasn’t bad at all.

In comparison to the S3, the A3 gets much nicer throttle mapping for the downshifts and a whole extra gear ratio with 7 on tap from the S Tronic gearbox. The available power from the 1.8-litre turbo engine means 7.3 seconds to 100kph, which is quite respectable and very usable in day-to-day driving.

Audi: 2014 S3 Sportback quattro review

June 11th, 2014 by Darren Cottingham

audi-s3-2014-frontI was walking with a friend when a yellow Lamborghini Murcielago passed us near Westhaven Marina. She asked me why people buy cars like that in bright colours.

“Advertising,” I replied. It’s all about advertising the fact that you can spend half a mil’ on a car, and you want people to know. Plus, it looks cool. She didn’t understand the ‘looks cool’ bit. Continue reading “Audi: 2014 S3 Sportback quattro review” »
