Porsche make plans for new V8-powered flagship

May 5th, 2011 by Darren Cottingham

According to unconfirmed reports Porsche is planning an all-new flagship model that will sit above the 911 in its growing range. This next-generation model will apparently come with a V8 engine and possibly use the 961 nameplate.

This 961 will feature a mid-mounted V8 engine powering the rear axle. An all-wheel drive hybrid variant with an electric-powered front axle may also see production. It would use a set up similar to the KERS system seen in the 918 RSR Coupe (pictured) which debuted in Detroit earlier this year.

The 961’s design will also be largely inspired by the 918 RSR Coupe. Power output will be around the 441 kW mark like the RSR Coupe prototype. Expect a price tag upwards of €200,000 and if it does make it to production sales won’t start before late 2013.
