XC90 adds Woman’s CotY to haul

The Volvo XC90 has continued its strong showing in Car of the Year judging, taking out yet another top award.

Having claimed in recent weeks the top award from the National Business review and the AMI Autocar awards, the SUV has added the Woman’s World Car of the Year Supreme award to the list.

The WWCotY is lead from New Zealand, but judged by a panel of motoring writers from around the world.

Category winners in the 2015 Women’s World Car of the Year were:

Family Car: Renault Espace
Budget Car: Scion iM/Toyota Auris
SUV Crossover: Volvo XC90
Green Car: BMW i8
Luxury Car: Mercedes S-Class
Performance Car: Mercedes GT AMG

Aside from the main award, judges are asked to vote for their ‘Dream’ car, one they would aspire to own given the choice. The clear winner this year was the Mazda MX5.

Kiwi motoring writer and award voter Jacqui Madelin notes the affordability of the MX5.

“Given the MX-5 created a benchmark for an affordable sports car that didn’t compromise handling in the search for a convertible format, Mazda gave itself a hard act to follow,” Madelin says. “Yet it created a car which is modern, handles like a dream, remains easy to live with day-to-day and is still enormous fun to fling along a tight and twisty road.”
