VW-Porsche merger may see return of Auto Union name

Is Porsche buying VW or is VW buying Porsche? Now, it appears that VW is buying Porsche… sort of. But what is interesting is that the upcoming merger may see the Auto Union brand revived as a name for a combined company. Porsche and Volkswagen have reportedly come to an agreement on what the car business of Porsche AG is worth and a deal could soon be signed. The top brass from both sides are meeting this week to decide on moving forward with an acquisition valued at €8-11 billion.

According to a statement released by the VW Group on the announcement of the acquisition, “The integrated automotive group will be formed from the progressive participation of Volkswagen in Porsche AG and the subsequent merger of Porsche Automobil Holding SE and Volkswagen AG. Porsche will remain an independent company headquartered in Stuttgart.”

Auto Union was well known for its advanced grand prix cars that wore the four ringed badge in the 1930s. The race cars were designed by Ferdinand Porsche for the company born of the merger of Audi, Horch, DKW and Wanderer. Eventually, all of Auto Union but the Audi brand faded away by the late 1960s, but the VW-owned company retained the icon.

Complete integration of VW and Porsche is expected by late 2011. There is no official word on reusing the Auto Union nameplate.
