Toyota Hilux team sets record South Pole crossing

It happened in December of 2010 but just this week Guinness World Records has recognised a new world record for the fastest overland journey to the South Pole.

Last year two modified Toyota Hilux trucks travelled 2,307 kilometers across the Antarctic High Plateau in 108 hours. Sounds pretty easy, right? Wrong, the average speed for the tough trip was just 21km/h which gives an indication of the extreme conditions the drivers had to deal with.

The expedition was organized by the Kazakhstan National Geographic Society and The Antarctica Company, and the crew was four strong. It included Konstantin Orlov and Stanislav Makarenko from KNGS, Andrey Myller from TAC, and Hlynur Sigurdsson from Arctic Trucks – the off-road tuning company that built the vehicles.

Arctic Trucks used the go-to model for rugged off roading – the Toyota Hilux. The specially prepared 3-litre turbodiesel Hiluxes were modified to carry a whopping 1078 litres of fuel, 280 litres in tanks and the rest on the Ute’s decks. The Arctic Trucks Expedition AT44 gets its name from 44×18.5 tyres fitted to 15-inch rims and can roll at tyre pressures as low as 2 psi. The 4WD Hiluxs have five-speed automatic transmissions with part-time transfer cases and a 2.566:1 low gear. Besides being able to carry up to 1.3 tons, the trucks were also expected to tow an additional 1.5 ton load on a trailer. Tough work for a tough truck.
