Toyota confirms continued sailing funding

Toyota New Zealand has confirmed it will continue its financial backing of Emirates Team New Zealand for the 2017 Americas Cup.

Toyota has backed the team since its inception, but with controversy and change surrounding the team and sport some had questioned if existing partners would stick with the team.

The next America’s Cup is taking place in Bermuda, and the company says its support will be more important than ever.

Toyota general manager of marketing, Andrew Davis, notes Toyota is the only major sponsor to have stayed loyal to Team New Zealand for more than two decades.

By the time the cup gets underway Toyota will have been sponsoring Emirates Team New Zealand for 25 years, a significant milestone in any relationship.

“There is no doubt with the increase in technology, and some new talent on the team this will be another extremely exciting regatta,” Davis says. “Of course bringing home the ‘Auld Mug’ would be a perfect way to celebrate our silver anniversary.”

“We are proud to be supporting the team on their latest campaign. Last time they were agonizingly close and this time we believe they have what it takes to bring it home.”

Lead-up events dubbed the America’s Cup World Series will start at Portsmouth next month followed by racing at Gothenburg Sweden in August and Bermuda in October.

Further racing over four to six events will be held next year with events already confirmed for Chicago and Portsmouth again.
