Ssangyong returning to NZ car market with new Korando C

Twelve months after suffering a debilitating labour strike in Korea Ssangyong Motors has returned to global car markets with a 736 % rise increase in production and world wide sales to July 2010.

Since January 2009 Ssangyong  Motor has been under government financial control through the Korean development bank taking a controlling financial interest. By way of an auction process a new share holder will gain control of the company by December 2010.  Leading this process is Indian company Mahindra and Mahindra India’s leading SUV maker.

In New Zealand Great Lake Motor Distributors have taken over the distribution rights and are pressing forward with the appointment of a national dealer and service network.

Great Lake Motor Distributors chairman Mr Rick Cooper has stated that in New Zealand the new company will concentrate on Ssangyong’s strong SUV  and utility models.

Mr Cooper stated that the popular Rexton model range will start from $49,990+ORC automatic, 2.7 diesel with low range and 121Kw engine, The top spec SPR model with 137Kw and 403Nm has been reduced from $64,990+ORC  to $59,990+ORC  with improved specification. A new model Rexton Sport has been added with leather seats 18″ wheels and the powerful 137Kw engine for $54,990 +ORC

All Rexton’s will come with 7 seats, full safety options and a 3.2 ton towing capacity.

The Kyron will start at $41,990 for the  2.0 litre diesel automatic with a top spec SPR 2.7 diesel automatic costing $49,990.

The Action Sport utility model will come with the European 2.0 litre designed diesel engine, 4×4 with low range, ABS, 4 wheel disc brakes and alloy wheels as standard equipment, the  six speed automatic will come with cruise control standard. Prices will start at $35,990 + ORC  for 5 speed manual and $37990+ ORC  for 6 speed auto.

The top spec  6 speed automatic 4×4  Actyon Sport SPR model with Electric front seats  leather trim, heated front seats, automatic wipers and  light control will be priced at $44,990 + ORC.

The all new model Korando C (pictured) is expected to be on sale in New Zealand by January 2011. The Korando C will compete in the small SUV segment with an all new powerful 2.0Litre diesel engine. The new engine will have 135Kw power, 360Nm of torque and will be available with a new 6 speed automatic . Both 4×2 and 4×4 models will be available with pricing expected to start under $40,000.

Mr  Cooper stated that when New Zealanders see the Korando C in the flesh they will be very surprised with the European design and Korean build quality.
