Revised Prado receives Euro 5 diesel engine

The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado has received a new 2.8-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder engine as part of revisions for the 2015 model year.

The all-new direct-injection 1GD Series turbo diesel engine features thermal swing wall insulation technology. The thermal barrier technology helps the engine achieve a maximum thermal efficiency of 44%.

Fuel filtration has been enhanced with the addition of a secondary high-pressure fuel filter to protect expensive and precise fuel system components.

These changes have helped the engine meet Euro 5 emissions standards with 6% lower CO2 exhaust emissions than the previous 3-litre 1KD engine used.

“By starting with a clean sheet of paper the Toyota engineers were able to use new materials and innovative thinking. A more rigid block allowed the number of head bolts to be reduced freeing up space to optimise head port shape for better fuel flow,” says Toyota New Zealand product general manager Spencer Morris.

“Higher engine outputs make it easier to drive, especially with new levels of low-down torque that promote strong traction, acceleration and pulling power when needed,” he says.

Another highlight of the new engine is noise suppression, with significant work undertaken to tune the sound of the engine and reduce decibel levels says Toyota.

The range opening GX, mid-range VX and flagship VX Limited receive the diesel engine while the VX petrol variant will continue with the proven 4.0-litre V6 engine.

All four variants have new six-speed automatic, sequential shift All Wheel Drive transmission designed to allow brisk acceleration at low-to-medium speeds.

The GX gains satellite navigation with a 7-inch display screen, combined with a nine-speaker audio system, SUNA traffic notification system, Bluetooth, telephone and audio player. Both VX models have the 14 speaker JBL premium audio system, which was previously an optional extra.

Enhancements to safety specification levels include the addition of blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert features on the VX grade. The VX Limited also receives a pre-crash system, which includes pre-crash brake assist, pre-crash seat belts and pre-crash brake.

All VX models receive the Toyota kinetic dynamic suspension system, which adjusts the front and rear stabiliser bars based on the movement of hydraulic cylinders. High Roll rigidity is provided to suppress body roll and give a superior on-road performance.

There is double wishbone suspension at the front and a four link rigid rear axle with a lateral control rod. Coil suspension is fitted.

All models have rear parking sensors and VX and VX Limited have front mounted sensors. An automatic headlight levelling system is standard on the VX and VX Limited and manually adjustable on the GX.

The introduction of the driver eight-way power seat adjustment with active headrests and front passenger four-way power seat adjustment makes the cabin more comfortable says Toyota.

With ventilated disc anti-lock brakes, brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution, vehicle stability control and trailer sway control on all models, the Prado has an ANCAP five-star safety rating.
