Porsche celebrates 250,000th Cayenne

The Porsche Cayenne has been nothing short of a blockbuster sales success for the German automaker that’s normally associated with lightweight, technologically-advanced sportscars. Just to let everyone know, Porsche has just announced that the 250,000th Cayenne has rolled down the assembly line at its plant in Leipzig, Germany. This vehicle happens to be destined for Austria, but Porsche is quick to point out that the SUV gives it access to markets like China, Russia, Latin America and the Middle East that would typically shy away from the brand’s sportscars. Now, the Cayenne is offered in 7-different variants.

Porsche has sold 150,000 vehicles worldwide from its first generation. Since the market launch of the second generation in February 2007, Porsche has been able to increase sales even further thanks to the vehicle’s improved fuel efficiency, higher drive performance, and upgraded handling. For this reason the sports car manufacturer has also continued to expand production at the Leipzig location. In the 2007/08 fiscal year just expired Porsche was able to sell 45,478 units of the Cayenne series.

The specific Cayenne to hit the quarter-million mark happens to be powered by a six-cylinder diesel engine, another stark departure for the automaker that had once offered only the high-rpms of the petrol engine. The Cayenne is a success story for Porsche and has inspired the creation of numerous rival crossover vehicles from other manufacturers.
