Is it petrol or diesel? Crikey no, it’s DEF

Motorists are advised to carefully check labels at truck stop bowsers before fuelling up their cars after several unsuspecting victims inadvertently and disastrously filled up with diesel exhaust fluid (DEF).

DEF is known by various brand names including AdBlue, Alliedblue, GoClear, Z DEC.

This warning comes from the Automobile Association after it received reports on the several incidents.

“The AA has had reports from motorists who’ve mistakenly thought this product was petrol or diesel or an additive, and put it into their fuel tanks. In each case, the car has been started, resulting in irreparable damage. Fortunately they’ve been fully covered by insurance, but it’s a major drama for such a simple mistake,” exclaims AA PetrolWatch spokesperson, Mark Stockdale.

DEF – which is not a fuel nor a fuel additive, and is not intended for a fuel tank but a separate tanks – is injected into late-model trucks’ exhaust systems to reduce emissions, although some new light diesel vehicles also have this feature.

Stockdale points out that the AA has made a request to some truck stop operators to improve their warning labels and signage to minimise this confusion, as well as potentially introduce other measures, like magnetic nozzles, that prevent DEF getting into fuel tanks.

Conventional service stations don’t dispense DEF at the pump, but instead sell it in small containers. “For light diesels that need this product, they can top up with the small container or when the vehicle is being serviced,” says the AA.

The AA advises people who think they have filled up with DEF or the wrong fuel to refrain from turning on the ignition but instead alert a service station attendant and call AA Roadservice on 0800 500 222.
