Pagani Zonda R claims new Nurburgring record time

The Nurburgring is a fierce battleground for car makers to measure their latest offerings and it seems that now there is a new champion. If you were amazed a few months back when Ferrari announced that it had broken the 7-minute barrier at the Nürburgring (read news) with its 599XX, then get ready, because the Prancing Horse has just been taken down by its own next-door neighbor.

Reports have come in that a new Nordschleife record has been set by the Pagani Zonda R. After Ferrari lapped the ring in 6:58 back in April, Pagani has now dropped over ten seconds off that time with a 6:47 run.

Now, the Zonda R isn’t exactly road legal, but neither is the 599XX with which Ferrari scored its record time. Both these ultra-modern supercars belong to a new category of vehicle known as the track car, which somehow stems the gap between street-legal and race cars with production-based forms. The Zonda R’s time also beats that of the Radical SR8 LM production lap record set last year and the Zonda is much more conventionally built than the Radical.

It’s no doubt the Zonda R is a mean piece of kit and the best part is that test driver Mark Basseng who set the record-breaking time thinks it can shed up to another 8-seconds off.
