NX200t debuts first turbocharged Lexus engine

Lexus’ first petrol turbo engine and the first ever turbo charged Atkinson Cycle engine has arrived in the New Zealand market.

The new 175kW turbo-charged four-cylinder 2-litre engine powers the NX200t SUV line, which consists of four grades; the NX200t 2WD, AWD, F Sport and Limited.

The new engine uses D-4ST fuel injection technology to create responsive and smooth acceleration says Lexus.

Compared to the 2.5-litre engine with Lexus Hybrid Drive powering the NX300h, which delivers combined fuel consumption of 5.6L/100km and 131g/km carbon emissions, the new NX200t offers combined fuel efficiency: 7.7L/100km and 178g/km carbon emissions for the 2WD model.

The NX200t turbo typically only operates at the boost pressure necessary to ensure required torque, with peak torque of 350Nm available between 1650-4000rpm.

Lexus’ new petrol turbo engine features a specially developed twin-scroll turbo charger with an active waste-gate valve and has been engineered by Lexus to offer satisfyingly fast throttle response.

The goal to provide such a degree of throttle responsiveness also led Lexus engineers to develop a water-to-air intercooler for the new engine.

Working in sync with shift pattern data from the six-speed super electronically controlled automatic transmission (Super ECT), Lexus’ system applies an increase in controlled boost pressure just before an up-shift in gear ratio, ensuring boost pressure matches precisely, while at the same time helping to preserve fuel economy.

Aiding fuel efficiency further the 2.0-litre turbo engine incorporates Lexus’ Stop & Start technology as standard to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions during around-town commuting. The engine restarts in less than half a second after the brake pedal is released, seamlessly giving the driver full acceleration when required.

Lexus’ six-speed Super ECT features a suite of advanced technologies, including AI-Control (Artificial Intelligence Control) which automatically changes shift patterns in response to road conditions and driver inputs for a more involving on-road experience.

Special F Sport alloy wheels wrapped in 235/55 R18 performance tyres, front and rear performance suspension dampers, aluminium paddle shifters and pedals, supportive F Sport leather sports seats, a Heads-Up Display system and Mark Levinson premium audio among other features are added with the F Sport package.

The Lexus NX200t range is available in dealerships now and is priced from $79,900.
