Nissan Navara ST-X refreshed for 2010 in NZ

The Navara ST-X ute has been reworked for 2010 and even has a new badge that reads 450. This subtle badge refers to 450 Newton metres of torque meaning the latest rendition of Nissan’s ST-X ute has reclaimed a place as the most powerful and torquiest ute in the class.

The 2.5 litre turbo diesel motor which powers the 4WD model now comes with 140 kWs, a 12 kWs increase, while the torque rises from 403 Nm to 450 Nm. At the same time there are improvements in fuel economy and lower emission levels.

“With class-leading diesel power and torque, improved fuel economy, lower emissions, more safety equipment, better quality and a refreshed visual appeal, the new Navara is well-positioned to attract even more customers to its ranks,” says John Manley the Managing Director of Nissan New Zealand.

“It offers performance and equipment advantages over its closest rivals that the market will find hard to ignore, particularly versions equipped with the new high-output turbo-diesel engine,” Manley said.

The exterior and interior design has been refreshed and more luxury equipment such as dual zone climate control air conditioning plus a full complement of active and passive safety features including ESP stability control are now included.

The common rail engine was tuned by Nissan’s R&D team. The output increases are combined with decreases in economy and apparently because exhaust emissions are also reduced, refinement levels are increased.

The changes include a new direct injection system, which operates at 2000 bar, up from 1800 bar. This increase in pressure means the fuel spray is atomised to an even finer degree, resulting in more complete combustion. A new cylinder head with parallel ports increases the swirl efficiency of the combustion process, smoothing the intake and exhaust flow, while a new variable nozzle turbo (VNT) with electric control replacing the previous vacuum system.

The 2WD diesel models have also benefitted with power rising from 106 kWs to 120 kWs and the torque increasing from 356 Nm to 403 Nm.

The 198kW V6 4.0-litre petrol engine currently offered in the ST-X continues unchanged.

The Navara ST-X is available with a six speed manual gearbox or a five speed automatic, which also has a manual mode.

Over the combined fuel cycle test 6-speed manual versions use 8.5-litres of diesel per 100km, a substantial 1.3-litres less fuel (or 13 percent less) than before. The 5-speed automatic ST-X Dual Cab saves even more fuel at 9.0 litres/100kms versus 10.5 litres/100kms of the previous model — a 15 percent saving. Additionally, CO2 emissions are cut substantially by 40g/km to 224g/km.

In terms of looks the 2010 Navara ST-X gets some new front styling. Changes include a new bonnet, larger grille and a new bumper assembly, which add 80mm to the overall length.

The detailed changes inside the cabin include new switchgear, revised door trims, new seat fabric, and the addition of chrome highlights and revised instrument dials. Switchgear changes include a new, easier to use, all-wheel drive command control switch while the steering wheel controls for the phone and audio are now illuminated.

A new centre-floor console design creates a more contemporary interior. The new ST-X also gains dual zone climate control air conditioning plus power folding mirrors, Bluetooth hands free phone connectivity, auxiliary input for MP3 devices and a drive computer. Illuminated steering wheel controls for the phone and audio complete the interior changes.

Safety is well covered with a full complement of airbags fitted to the latest Navara ST-X as standard, including driver and front passenger, side and curtain airbags. There are 3-point seatbelts for all five seats and child safety anchor points in the rear. Active head restraints are another critical safety feature fitted to the new Navara ST-X. Active safety is catered for with Nissan’s Electronic Stability Program (ESP) now fitted as standard on ST-X 4WD diesel models, along with Active Brake Limited Slip (ABLS) which works in conjunction with the ESP and ABS.

The turbo-diesel powered Navara ST-X 4WD has a six-speed manual gearbox as well as ESP and Brake Assist, EBD, 17-inch alloys, height-adjustable headlight control, folding electrically-adjustable mirrors, 6 speakers, three-point rear seatbelts for all seats, switch operated AWD mode selection, 4-channel Utili-track load restraint system, 60/40 split folding rear seats and dual zone climate control.
