Mitsubishi NZ expecting no impact from further fuel-test issues

Mitsubishi Motors in Japan has been told to stop selling a number of key models over issues with fuel efficiency testing – including some sold here.

The latest models affected by the fuel efficiency scandal include variants of the Pajero, Outlander and RVR – known as the ASX here.

“Our investigation confirmed that the fuel economy on eight models were as much as 8.8% and on average 4.2% lower than advertised,” the Japanese transport ministry said in a statement.

Eight models have been pulled from the market while the ratings are corrected.

Mitsubishi manager of sales and marketing strategy Daniel Cook told Auto Media Group this morning the incorrect ratings were unlikely to have impacted those used in New Zealand.

“We are not expecting any impact here at this stage, mostly because if the vehicle uses a European or American testing standard it is correct,” Cook says.

Nor has production been halted, so supply is not an issue.

The vehicles are not actually set up to cheat tests – as per the Volkswagen case – but the testing methodology is incorrect.
