Mercedes set to drop the V12 engine

Mercedes V12 motor

Mercedes-Benz, have believed in the value of the V12 engine for a long time, but changing vehicle shapes and better technology have led to rumours of the V12’s demise. While fuel efficiency is a welcome side-effect the real reason for change is that the V12 engine block is just too long. A V12 is, for all purposes, the same length as an inline-six, and the German automaker’s latest line of mainstream engines are all in a V-design, so its cars are no longer being designed with an engine compartment large enough to house such a lengthy engine. The company isn’t abandoning high horsepower in general. The V12 program is apparently being shifted towards twin-turbo V8s, and with forced-induction there’s no reason to assume that fewer cylinders will equal less horsepower. Expect the change over to happen over the next few years.
