Mercedes celebrates G-Wagen’s birthday with Edition30

The famous Mercedes Geländewagen despite its advanced years is showing no signs of slowing down. It has been in production since originally being designed on a military contract for the Shah of Iran, who was a major shareholder in Daimler-Benz in the late seventies. The G-Wagen or G-Class has been hand-built in Austria for 30 years now. To celebrate Mercedes-Benz is launching two different special anniversary models.

The Edition30 is the more premium of the two, a special G-Class based on the W463-chassis G500 and specified more for luxury with a unique leather and wood interior and Platinum Black paint job. The Edition30.PUR a far more hardcore prospect, based on the older W461 chassis with G280 CDI running gear, and fitted out with off-road tyres, headlamp guards, flexible wheel arches and a hood that can support the weight of a person. Inside the Edition30.PUR is Spartan, with a wash-down interior upholstered in heavy-duty fabric or synthetic leather. The G-Wagen deserves its swan-song and Mercedes clearly recognise the two types of enthusiasts for the vehicle, those who use its rugged capabilities and those who pretend to.
