Maserati takes luxury SUV to Goodwood

Maserati takes luxury SUV to Goodwood

It could be genius – or it may not – but Maserati will give its Levante luxury SUV a very public baptism of fire at the legendary Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The Levante – which hits these shores early next year – is the company’s first crack at the lucrative SUV market, and its abilities on attack have been the source of much speculation.

It weighs 2100-odd kilos, is 5m long, has a 3m wheelbase and towers 1.6m high – displaying dynamic driving, at pace, up that hill, is going to take an effort.

And all while while maintaining that sense of style that Maserati-ati so enjoy…it just better look bloody bella, body roll and tank slappers won’t be tolerated.

There is said to be a monster 430kW-engined version of the luxury machine due in 2018, according to rumour.

But for an event as quick as Goodwood, the company is likely to show off the 3.8L twin-turbo V8 as per the Quattroporte GTS – it still makes 390kW, and is the same base engine as the Ferrari California T, albeit downtuned by around 100kW. There’s also a force-fed six cylinder version and a diesel, but that’d be inappropriate at the famous estate.

The SUV-to-see will make an appearance during the Moving Motor Show on Goodwood’s press and preview day, which has been the event’s sneak peak opportunity since 2010.

The 1.86km hillclimb run will take place during the First Glance class throughout the weekend – meaning less pressure…except for the style thing, of course.

Goodwood Festival of Speed runs June 23-26.
