X marks the spot for Ford

Ford has confirmed that the next generation of Ford Falcon will be known as the FG X.

The “FG” series prefix carries over for the refreshed Falcon range, as a way to promote the heritage of the Fairmont and Ghia nameplates that have featured on previous prestige Falcon models.

The letter “X” is also a significant piece of the Falcon story, having been used for both the original Falcon XK model in 1960 and through four-generations of Falcons from the 1960s through to the 1990s, including some of the more popular Falcon models like the XR, XW, XY, XA, XB, XD and XF.

Ford arrived at the FG X model code after significant feedback from enthusiasts as well as the senior product development and marketing teams.

“Ford wanted to make sure this celebration Falcon was worthy of the FG X name,” says Ford Australia president and chief executive, Bob Graziano says.

The next generation Falcon sedan features a refined front and rear design treatments and drivetrains that will give customers the choice of four, six and V8 engines. When the Falcon is launched later this year, it will be the only Australian-built large car available with three engine choices – four, six and eight cylinders – as well as EcoLPi LPG and turbo variants.

The new Territory SUV will be known as the SZ II and like the current range, will be available in the TX, TS and Titanium variants. Mechanically the SZ II will continue with the in-line 4L six-cylinder petrol engine and award-winning 2.7L Duratorq TDCi diesel V6.

Pricing, features and specifications of the Falcon and Territory range will be revealed closer to launch says Ford.
