Lexus IS gets grumpy new face

Lexus has gone from beige to dynamic and now, it seems, to stroppy.

Unveiled at the Beijing motor show this week, the new Lexus IS sports sedan is unashamedly aggressive, sharply styled and seemingly taking aim at helping customers keep mid-life crises at bay.

Lexus New Zealand GM of product Spencer Morris admits that the IS has been a “consistent favourite in New Zealand amongst drivers who are young at heart.”

“The changes introduced in 2017 align with the signature L-finesse design philosophy and adopt the latest innovative technology for great driving enjoyment.”

And tech there is – full pre-crash system, advanced dynamic cruise control, Lexus ‘Safety System+’ are all on board, and perhaps in further recognition of the age-range target, the multimedia display has grown from 7 to 10.3-inches.

The most noticeable evolutions on the exterior are a redesign of the love-or-hate spindle grill, bigger air intakes and reshaped headlights that help the car look lower, more purposeful and, importantly, faster.

Morris says the New Zealand line-up will remain as-is in terms of model mix, but the launch roster will be IS 200t, IS 300h and IS 350. Pricing and final Kiwi spec will be available closer to when the boat arrives.
