Lexus builds bespoke LS 600h Landaulet for Prince Albert of Monaco wedding

Wedding cars are usually a bit flash with brands like Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Lexus being commonly used. But what isn’t common is having Lexus actually build a unique car for your big day. If you’re Prince Albert II of Monaco it isn’t a problem at all. The Prince is all set for his wedding day with a bespoke Lexus LS 600h Landaulet.

If you’re like us, you’re now asking yourself what exactly a Landaulet really is. The Landaulet is a design that was orignally popular in the early part of the last century and is when a regular sedan is given a fabric roof-centre that can stow away. But the Prince’s one-off Lexus Landaulet, is fitted with a one-piece transparent polycarbonate roof.

The bubble top Lexus will be used as the Prince’s official wedding wagon this Saturday (July 2) when he marries Carlene Wittstock in Monte Carlo. Lexus is the official car brand of the green-loving Prince so it’s little suprise that this limo uses hybrid power.

The challenging bodywork on the Landaulet was built by Belgian coachbuilder Carat Duchatelet in collaboration with Lexus. Apparently it took over 2,000 hours to complete and the Midnight Blue paintwork was applied by hand using water-based paints.

The tricky roof shape was created in a computer-aided design calculation with various simulations and 3D modeling. Honeycomb structures were used to reinforce the body shell and Kevlar and carbon fibre composite materials helped maintain suitable chassis stiffness and torsional rigidity following the removal of the roof and pillars. The transparent roof itself is a single piece of lightweight polycarbonate with no reinforcements or pillars.

The main duty for the Lexus LS 600h Landaulet on the big day will be transporting the royal couple on a tour of the Monte Carlo principality after the marriage ceremony. After the celebrations the car will be shown in the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco.
