Kombi comeback makes for happy hippies

Kombi comeback makes for happy hippies

While big bags of kale and buckets of marinated mung beans have probably replaced the original Kombi diet, there’s a worldwide base of customers that are grown-up, cashed-up and probably signed-up to get an early drive of the Kombi reboot – Volkswagen’s California Ocean.

The west coast mightn’t quite the idylic surf spot it was when the originals landed in sandy car parks full of long-hairs and topped with piles of surfboards up to 90-feet long.

The Ocean’s interior transforms into a four adult camper – a rear two-seater bench creates a double bed on the ‘first floor’ and the old-skool pop-up roof lifts to reveal a second spacious sleeping birth.

Volkswagen general manager Tom Ruddenklau says: “What began with the Volkswagen Kombi as a rolling symbol for independence and freedom has become a true home on four wheels in the California. There is no better way to add to the success story of a legend, and no better way to express your current attitude to life.

“The new Volkswagen California provides a luxury way of touring New Zealand at its best – on the road with all the creature comforts.”

The slim-line kitchen boasts a cooling box, gas cook tops, sink and good storage space.

It provides the ideal home for everyday life while on the road. Driving comfort, safety and off-road capability is achieved effortlessly thanks to its 4MOTION all-wheel drive and seven-speed dual clutch (DSG) gearbox.

A Kombi that starts first time? Pinch me, I’m California dreaming. That said, the entry ticket for this classy camper – in its sixth generation overseas – is $130,000.
