Kiwi love affair with compact SUV continues

Turners Group has cited lower petrol prices and the popularity of SUVs as a reason for the growing shift toward two to three-litre used cars.

This information is contained in the secondhand vehicle retailer’s September 2016 Used Car Market Report out today.

The report shows that Turner’s biggest seller in September was the ever popular Holden Commodore, followed closely by Toyota’s Corolla and Hilux duo. The new presence of the Kia Sportage in third place highlighted Kiwi’s love of the compact SUV.

TurnersComparatively, new car sales were quieter in September than August compared to last year, but still up almost 10% on September 2015 according to the report.

The divide between two to three-litre used cars and their slightly smaller 1.6 to two-litre cousins is the largest it has been in over 12 months.

The NZ Transport Agency’s change of ownership figures indicate a continuation of healthy growth for the used car market, with the Bay of Plenty leading this growth; Thames, Tauranga and Rotorua districts were all up well over 11% on the same month last year, compared to an overall national increase of almost 4%.
