Honda reanimates Civic in line with lessons learned

Honda New Zealand has some grand plans for its new Civic sedan, including enticing customers away from hatches and SUVs, by offering a four-model lineup priced from $29,900.

The new Gen-10 Civic sedan’s four grades span the entry-level 1.8-litre S priced from $29,900, the more upscale 1.5-litre Civic Turbo from $35,500, the sports-orientated Civic RS Turbo from $39,900, and the luxury-focused Civic NT Turbo from $42,900.

The distributor deems the target of 600 sales by March next year weak as it has already received 55 preorders, including some from owners of the larger Accord Euro sedan and the Civic Euro hatchback.

Even though a new Civic hatchback based on the same global platform is set to enter the scene next year, for now the focal point for Honda New Zealand general manager for marketing Nadine Bell is finding new buyers for the Civic sedan, with the new 1.5-litre turbo engine and the older 1.8-litre anticipated to appeal to people downsizing from sedans as well traditional Civic buyers seeking good value respectively.

Through the process Honda has learned that it should stick to a tried and trusted formula and by that it should stick to its sporty vehicles as opposed to attempting to produce mass market appliances.

That the message has been well heard is evident in its tenth generation (Gen-10) Civic focused on charismatic design and packaging and dynamic performance.

It has effectively produced a vibrant looking and handling small sports sedan as a result of its 127kW 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and CVT transmission which incorporates a torque converter to give the car a similar feel and response to a traditional automatic transmission.

The new Civic sedan has a longer wheelbase and is wider than its predecessor, and Honda says it has provided more interior room by doing away with the conventional handbrake lever by using an electronic parking brake.

Boot space has increased by 20% to 519L from the previous Civic sedan. Honda has also created more space in the centre stack for handheld electronic devices as well as USB power outlets. By removing the cup holders in the console it has created 7.2-litres of space for iPads or other small tablet devices. For millenials who need to text and drive, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are installed on all grades.

The new Civic sedan also introduces higher levels of active and passive safety features to the class with the adoption of Honda Sensing in the Civic Turbo NT. Honda Sensing packages up collision mitigation braking, road departure mitigation, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise with a low speed following capability. The Civic NT Turbo also has Garmin navigation as a standard feature.
