The Green Hell gets a new owner

After becoming insolvent in 2012 Germany’s infamous Nurburgring-Nordscheife circuit has just been sold to a new owner.

Named the Green Hell by former F1 driver Jackie Stewart, the circuit is part of a motorsport complex located around the village of Nurburg in the Eifel Mountains, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

Attempts by the previous owner to build Nurburgring into a resort for car fanatics failed when the company became insolvent, loaded with debt equivalent to 50 years of annual profit says the administrator Jens Lieser.

German motorsport industry supplier Capricorn Group has paid more than 100 million Euro for the Nurburgring assets which includes the infamous 28km Nordscheife circuit built in 1927 as well as a 5.1km Formula One circuit built in the 1980s, and an amusement park.

The old Nordscheife circuit is now used by the automotive industry as a test track for vehicles. Hyundai is one of five companies which has a trackside test centre at Nurburgring. Jaguar also has a base near the village of Nurburg as do many of the German DTM racing teams.

Capricorn which manufactures and supplies crankshafts, cylinder liners, pistons, connecting rods and fibre-reinforced composite materials to the motorsport industry wishes to develop Nurburgring as a technology centre.

It won the bid for the circuit from a rival, by pledging to invest more than 25 million Euro to expand facilities around the Nurburgring says the administrator.
