Ford working on new V8 motor for Mustang

When the 2010 Ford Mustang debuted, there were a few long faces among enthusiasts who hoped Ford would update the aging 4.6-litre V8 along with the new sheetmetal. So when a few spy shots surfaced in January showing an all new aluminum engine nestled under the hood of a factory Mustang, rumour started that Ford had something else up its sleeve — and now there’s confirmation.

According to Ford Australia’s product development director, Russell Christophers, Ford’s U.S. based team is working on a aluminum double-overhead cam 5.0-litre V8 called the “Coyote” — with output expected to be 400 hp and around 400 lb-ft of torque.

The new 32-valve, 5.0-litre V8 is expected to be fitted to the Mustang and F-150 sometime during 2010, replacing the current 4.6- and 5.4-litre units. With its aluminum block, it should be significantly lighter than the current V8, and with this new weapon in its arsenal Ford looks to be taking the fight to the new Chevrolet Camaro.
