Driverless Audi RS7 takes on race track

Audi will take a driverless Audi RS7 Sportback on a hot lap on the Hockenheim race track this Sunday, October 19, in the season finale of the German Touring Car Championship. In the process, it will be as fast as it would be with a professional race car driver at the wheel.

Already the driverless RS7 has been tested against a real driver and it won that race. Two Audi RS7 sedans completed hot laps around the track; one piloted by a human and the other one driving autonomously. The driverless car, called ‘Bobby,’ beat the human driver by five seconds, reaching speeds of up to 240km/hour.

The Audi RS7 piloted driving concept car will handle the Hockenheim track at racing speed. With the latest Audi developments on board, the technology demonstrator will drive to its physical limits with millimetre precision.

The automaker claims that the technologies it is developing for driverless cars will be featuring in vehicles by the end of this decade. These technologies will include cars’ ability to take over steering and acceleration when they’re in a traffic jam and automatic parking.

The performance of the world’s first driverless piloted driving car will be broadcasted live on the Internet on October 19 starting at 12:45 pm on Audi MediaTV.
