DeTomaso marque for sale – just $3.4m NZ

DeTomaso marque for sale

Italian-Argentine flamboyant carmaker DeTomaso has been in liquidation since 2004 and last weekend the entire brand was on the auction block, again. For a starting bid of €1.6 million (nearly $3.4 million NZ) DeTomaso could have been yours. While that seems like a bargain basement deal for an established nameplate with some credibility, no buyers could be found.

The price for the brand, logos, and car designs, is down from the 2008 opening bid of €1.78 million. Now, as then, there were plenty of interested parties, but no one bidding.

The DeTomaso brand is probably best known for its Pantera, powered by Ford hardware and sharply designed by Tom Tjaarda, but other aesthetically pleasing cars were developed, like the Vallelunga, Mangusta, and Longchamp. Alejandro DeTomaso had his hands in Maserati, Moto Guzzi, Ghia — and even Chrysler — as well as a Formula 1 venture that corralled the talents of names such as Dallara and Williams.

DeTomaso should go to auction again but for a lower price, and once again interest from Italy, Asia, and the Middle East will take a look and see if the price is attractive enough to take a punt on.
