Controversy over Crump Hilux

Controversy over Crump Hilux

Controversy has broken out over the advertising for sale of a Toyota Hilux used as part of the iconic Barry Crump Toyota advertisements.

The Hilux, listed HERE for $25,000 was the 33rd Hilux off the production line, and the buyer says it has been confirmed by Toyota NZ as being one of the advertisement vehicles.

The advert showed Crump scaring his side-kick Scottie, with the campaign catchline, “The incredible new Toyota Hilux four wheel drive. It’s so good, it’s frightening.”

The ute still carries the original number plates from the advertisement, and was featured in Top Gear NZ magazine.

Filmmaker Taika Waititi, who is in the process of launching the film Hunt for the Wilderpeople – based off Crump’s novel Wild Pork and Watercress – which features an old Hilux – has blasted the sale.

“Please don’t pay these blaggards 25k for a car full of rust,” he tweeted.

“Nice timing btw, cashing in on our film’s release!”
