Citroen previews Metropolis luxury sedan

It was back in 2008 that Citroen unveiled a new concept car named after its legendary DS that previewed a future range of upmarket vehicles and was aimed at transforming the French automaker into an almost premium brand.

Now, Citroen has taken it a step further by previewing a brand new luxury sedan concept that’s aimed at competing with the German high-rollers like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7-Series. The concept is names the Metropolis and measures 5.3m in length and a full 2m in width, this makes the vehicle is longer than the recently revealed 2011 Audi A8 Limo and wider than the uber-expensive Maybach 62.

The Metropolis marks the first project to be completed by PSA Peugeot-Citroen’s new Chinese design studio and there’s a possibility a version of the concept car could go into production for Chinese domestic sale. Underneath the modern design lays a modified version of Citroen’s Platform 3 architecture, which is used on the Citroen C6.

Motivation on the concept vehicle comes from a version of PSA Peugeot-Citroen’s HYmotion4 hybrid system. Apparently a 2.0-litre V-6 producing 272 horsepower drives the front axle while an electric motor moves the rear one. The combined output of the system is 460 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed dual clutch transmission handles shifting duties.

For the big reveal, Citroen has chosen to skip this month’s 2010 Beijing Auto Show and will instead use next month’s Expo 2010 in Shanghai China.
