New car sales drop, used rise in Japan

TOYOTAWhile new passenger car sales continue to tumble in Japan, used sales are on the way up – the first rise in years.

The first quarter saw sales drop by 7.47% – and for March sales dropped by 10.79% year on year March 2015 saw an even bigger drop of 11.9%.

Toyota remains the country’s biggest brand.

Latest data provided by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (JAMA) shows the mini sector – also the region’s biggest selling class – has taken a hit of just under 10%.

Used cars recorded a 1.7% rise in the 2015 financial year – the first time in three years that it’s shown any growth.

3.73m used cars were sold over the year – although it is still the second lowest number since data became available in 1978, according to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association (JADA).
