Bolder and more confident Camry arrives in July

The revised 2015 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid sedan will arrive in dealerships in July and the only carry over component from the previous generation is the roof says the Japanese manufacturer

Five new grades of petrol models are available. These are the Camry GL, Atara, Atara S and Atara SX. The Atara SX showcases improved on-road dynamics says Toyota.

The hybrid petrol-electric variants share the GL and Atara S grades with an additional Atara SL luxury grade.

According to the car’s chief engineer Masato Katsumata, the new Camry was developed for customers who want a car with more emotional styling and greater driving enjoyment.

“We wanted to produce a Camry that appeals to its traditional customers as well as to younger buyers,” he says.

“As a result, this is the boldest-looking Camry yet. The car is more expressive, more athletic and more confident.”

The only external panel that remains unchanged from the previous generation is the roof.

The Camry GL has a horizontal lower grille design that sets it apart from the honeycomb patterned grille on the new Camry Atara, Atara S and top grade Atara SX and Atara SL Hybrid.

New halogen headlight clusters feature a mix of grade-dependent chrome or piano black accents, while all models now boast standard LED daytime running lights.

The exterior changes extend to the Camry’s flanks and rear, with newly designed rear combination tail lights and grade-specific bright or smoked chrome boot garnish.

New exterior colour options make their debut in the 2015 line-up also, with Ocean Mist and Indigo joining the colour palette.

Inside the cabin, drivers will note updated seat fabrics in all grades, new colour combinations for the Atara SX’s leather sports seats, a newly designed three-spoke chrome-accented steering wheel featuring audio and Bluetooth hands-free phone controls, voice recognition on all Atara grades, as well as easy-to-use display audio systems for all iterations.

Two entirely new grades also join the Camry line-up for 2015.

The Camry Atara creates a stepping stone between the entry GL and the sportier Atara S and packs plenty of highlights, and a new Hybrid Atara S variant joins the Hybrid family positioned between the GL and Atara SL.

Camry’s Atara SX grade has a sportier character; 18” five spoke gloss black alloy wheels and sports suspension, a sport front lower radiator grille, rear spoiler, powered leather sports seats for the driver and interior trim accents.

The Camry Atara SX also features re-tuned electronic power steering to provide for the sharper driver feedback expected from a sports-themed model.

The Camry Hybrid Atara SL adds functionality in the form of rain sensing wipers, halogen headlamps featuring automatic high beam and reverse tilt outside rear vision mirrors with memory settings.

It also features wood panel accents and leather trimmed seats and armrest, powered driver and front passenger seats, a powered back window shade and a premium quality JBL ten-speaker audio system with inbuilt navigation.

Every Camry is powered by Toyota’s 2.5-litre four cylinder, Dual VVT-i petrol engine in two states of tune. The Camry GL features maximum power of 133kW and 231Nm of torque, while Atara, Atara S and Atara SX grades push available power to 135kW and torque to 235Nm.

The Camry Hybrid continues to sport the 2.5-litre four cylinder VVT-i engine with hybrid drive. This power-train offers up combined power of 151kW.

Combined fuel consumption for Camry’s petrol model’s stands at 7.8L/100km, while the Hybrid variants have combined fuel economy of 5.2L/100km.

Every Camry has standard reversing camera technology with moving guidelines on the Atara SL, and static guidelines for all other version, as well as seven airbags.

All grades also feature ABS (anti-lock braking system) and TRC (traction control), VSC (vehicle stability control), EBD (electronic brake-force distribution) and BA (brake assist).

Lane departure alert, blind spot detection and newly added rear cross traffic alert, along with dynamic radar cruise control and Toyota’s intelligent pre-crash safety system are also included within the suite of safety equipment in the Camry Hybrid Atara SL.

The 2015 Camry range will be available at Toyota dealers nationwide from July 1, 2015.
