BMW roundel emblem doesn’t come from planes

BMW Airplane Logo

It’s been recently revealed that BMW’s famous Roundel emblem wasn’t inspired by a spinning plane propeller. It’s a common misconception, one that’s finally been cleared up by BMW spokesman Tom Plucinsky, who explained that the company itself used to think its logo was tied to its aeronautical history.

Hardly the biggest scandal since Tiger Woods but it does leave the question of the logo’s real origin? It turns out the misunderstanding came from a 1929 advertisment that used the blue-and-white logo as roundels in the rotating propellers of an airplane. It’s easy to see where the confusion came from. The blue and white quadrants at the heart of the logo actually signify the state colours of Bavaria, and this isn’t the first time the logo’s origin has been examined in detail — historians have apparently traced the logo’s evolution from the Rapp Motorenwerke all the way through today.
