BMW may create a breakthrough green supercar

BMW M1 homage fq

Automotive rumours this week are surrounding BMW and plans to create a successor to the famous M1. The new M1 which is at this stage unnamed is touted to be a “breakthrough green supercar” that should arrive toward the end of 2012.

Taking inspiration from the M1 Homage concept (pictured) and equipping the two-door with BMW’s EfficientDynamics system, the mid-engine supercar is predicted to be pack BMW’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six found across the range. The German automaker expects fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions to be equal with a mid-range 5-series sedan, primarily through the use of direct-injection, brake regeneration, start-stop technology and possibly even its F1 team’s kinetic energy recovery system.

The experimental BMW supercar is expected to carry a price tag close to its nearest rivals, the Audi R8 and the Mercedes-Benz SLC.
