Aussie Invader to chase World Land Speed Record

Aussie Invader

The existing world land speed record was achieved by British pilot Andy Green back in 1997 and sits at 736 mph, which he achieved behind the wheel of Thrust SSC in the Nevada desert.

The same record breaking team is now working on a new world’s fastest car project named Bloodhound and is currently in the middle of testing the new car with its much more powerful jet engine.

However, out to cancel their efforts is an Australian-based team led by Rosco McGlashan. The Aussie team will be using a rocket-powered car that goes by the name of Aussie Invader 5R and they claim the machine can accelerate from 0 — 1,000 mph in just 20 seconds.

The vehicle features four individual rocket thrusters and weighs almost seven tons without fuel. Is it a fair dinkum good idea, or just a disaster waiting to happen? Who knows, but both the Aussie Invader and Bloodhound teams are unlikely to be ready until at least 2011, with most of their success now dependent on outside sponsorship dollars.
