Audi reveals the 2011 A8

Audi has just pulled the covers off its all-new A8 luxury limousine at an event held in Miami. Revealed was a car that’s more evolution than revolution and that Audi says is the sportiest in its class

Despite the clear heritage link to the outgoing model, there are a number of new technologies under the sheetmetal that are brand firsts, including full LED headlamps that adjust their direction and throw based on navigation system information, a trick handwriting recognition feature, and an eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox. Despite being more powerful, the A8 has also made increases to fuel efficiency, with Audi A8 2011 int1a claimed improvement of 15 percent with the petrol V8.

The 2011 Audi A8 will launch with two 4.2 litre engines – a naturally-aspirated direct-injected petrol V8 and a turbodiesel V8. The petrol-powered 4.2 FSI develops 273kW and 445Nm, however the 258kW 4.2 TDI beats it with its enormous 800Nm torque output.

Performance for either engine is rapid. The 4.2 FSI will accelerate the chunky A8 to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds, while the 4.2 TDI can get to the speed limit in just 5.5 seconds.

The aerodynamic new shell once again rests on the brand’s Aluminum Space Frame (ASF), and Audi says the car is longer and wider than its competitors but sits lower. The slippery new bodywork is good for a .26 coefficient of drag. The new A8 will be produced in both standard and extended-wheelbase models, and with TDI diesel and hybrid engine variants although the alternative fuel powertrains may be a while away.
