Audi reveals new R8

Audi has revealed its updated R8 supercar, ahead of its first public appearance at the Geneva Motor Show.

The headline power plant it a 5.2 FSI V10 engine with up to 449kW, capable of a 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds. The car uses a space frame constructed of aluminium, with the car carrying a large amount of carbon fibre.

That construction means the car weighs in at a relatively-light 1454kg – up to 50kg lighter than its predecessor.

In the new Audi virtual cockpit, the displays are digital. The most important controls are grouped together in button clusters on the steering wheel, also known as satellites. In the interior, the driver has the impression of sitting in a race car. MMI navigation plus with MMI touch is standard.

Sales of the new Audi R8 start in summer 2015.

Also set to spin off from the R8 will be the R8 e‑tron, the electric-version getting 340 kW and a torque of 920 Nm. It sprints from a standstill to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 3.9 seconds. Thanks to new battery cells, the range could be more than doubled compared to the first version, with a range currently of more than 450 kilometers.
