New all-terrain tyre launched by Goodyear

Goodyear New Zealand has launched the new all-terrain Wrangler DuraTrac tyre for applications, such as farming and construction, plus recreational activities, such as camping, fishing and caravanning.

Goodyear says it’s proprietary tractive groove technology enhances performance in deep mud, and a rugged tread rubber helps resist block chipping, chunking and tearing.

A combination of highly angled centre tread blocks and zig-zag microgrooves provide better lateral stability and enhanced wet traction, and reduces road noise says the tyre manufacturer.

Off-road driving instructor and consultant Pete Ritchies says he tested a set of Wrangler DuraTrac tyres for more than 18,000km on a Toyota Hilux across a broad variety of New Zealand terrain including road and bush.

Ritchie describes them as ideally suited for a range of backcountry conditions, with negligible noise on dry roads and no wet road sounds beyond normal.

“I ran them (Wrangler DuraTracs) at 26-28psi on 18-inch rims. They were good on the road with a heavy load and a trailer,” says Ritchie. “They tracked very well on corners and there was no side wallowing in windy conditions. The testing included extensive towing.

Ritchie also tested the Wrangler DuraTrac tyres in an off-road event after a week of heavy rain.

“The DuraTracs were able to handle our clay test climb in conditions some other tyre brands and types could not manage nearly as well,” he says.

Further features to assist in off-road conditions include self-cleaning, stepped shoulder blocks, coupled with thousands of biting edges for increased traction and handling.

A rim lock helps prevent wheel slip, for minimal balancing throughout the life of the tyre, and a built-in rim protector helps protect wheels from curb damage.

The Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tyre carries the European Commission noise symbol for meeting stringent standards for pass-by noise.
