2011 Hennessey Venom GT previewed with 725 hp

It seems like American-designed and built supercars are now back in favour and almost all of them are powered by big V8 engines. The Devon Motorworks GTX struck first making its debut at last year’s Pebble Beach Concours and now Hennessey Performance Engineering has just released its Venom GT supercar in final form.

Originally announced way back in 2007, the Venom GT has gone through many forms while still on the drawing board. However the latest and final form is a car that’s likely to prove uncompromisingly rapid and a solid handler too.

Based on the Lotus Elise, the Venom GT combines a high-tech, lightweight British chassis with a powerful American V8. Hennessey stayed consistent to Lotus’ light weight philosophy of and made all of the Venom GT’s bodywork including its wheels from carbon fibre.

Starting with a 1,088 kerb weight the Venom GT will pack in a Corvette ZR1 supercharged V-8 engine worked up to 725 horsepower (Hennessey will also be offering 1,000 and 1,200 horsepower twin-turbocharged models as well), the vehicle is a formula for frightening performance. Performance figures are just estimates at this stage but the 0-100 kph dash should take around 2.4 seconds, 0-160 kph in jsut 5.3 seconds, and a stomach turning top speed of 421 kph.

Other features include a Ricardo six-speed sequential gearbox shifting power to the rear wheels, Brembo brakes with 15 inch carbon-ceramic rotors, a programmable traction control system and active aerodynamics and suspension systems. Finally, connecting power to the ground are massive Michelin PS2 tyres.

At this stage, Hennessey has only announced plans for the Venom GT in the Middle East, Europe, Russia, Australia and Asia. Production will be limited to just 10 vehicles per year and the company has already taken orders for four cars.
