While Im a fan of the new 6 as well, how many people are going to pay (for this model) $6k more than the base CX5 with the same engine, similar interior space and spec.

Of course the 6 will handle and go a touch better, but id wager the CX5 resale will be higher.

At the same price, pretty even, however at $6k cheaper (GLX), CX5 wins hands down for me (and I suspect most private buyers)

Hey Ray, thanks for your comment. Larger engines are much less popular now and people are conscious of resale value. The diesel is pretty good - definitely better than the 2.4-litre petrol - and there is enough power (bearing in mind it's a big wallowy beast in the corners).

the Polo 1.2 TSi used to be 77kW.
Any expanation to why it is now "only" 66kW?

It seems VW do the opposite of very other manufacture (apart from their GTi), every model update means a lower output engine - IIRC, the twin charger 1.4L went from 125 to 118kW, and the std 1.4L went from 110 to 100, and finally to 90kW...
...many would say because of economy and emissions, however on numerous forums, a lot of unhappy owners are suggesting it is to try to improve reliability...

I note you havent listed the Nissan Pathfinder as a competitor? I would think it is far closer in concept to LTZ than either the Sorento or CX-9 (ladder chassis, based on ute etc)

I realise the Pathfinder is a touch pricier at RRP, but big discounts are easy to get (assume not far way from being on runout)

Hi Ryan, thanks for your comment. Re the issue of the 'moaning' note of the engine due to the CVT (which we do say is the engine and not the gearbox, but just a result of the gearbox), it's most evident in urban driving where it's stop-start at traffic lights, plus in hilly areas like Auckland and Wellington.
Cars are beginning to come out with 7- and 8-speed gearboxes which are allowing them to cruise at 2000rpm at 100kph, too. I remember my old WRX STI used to sit on 3300rpm at 100kph - that was noisy.

never really understood why people have such an issue with the "moaning" CVT - I think many people believe its the gearbox making the noise rather than the engine...

Ive driven quite a few modern CVT's in the last 12-18 months, all have been quite impressive (imo), allowing small engines to cruise at open road speeds at <2000rpm (whereas manual version of same car are often stuck at 3000rpm+)

Even the paddle shift CVT's were more useful than I expected, allowing you to to enforce decent engine braking into corners.

I wonder which licensing fee a purchaser of these hybrid type vehicles will use - private petrol $280.34 or private non-petrol $410.19.

As an aside, I believe the recently announced W of F review was actually a cover up for the ramping up to outrageous levels of these vehicle licensing fees - especially diesel powered vehicles, the current crop of which are way more economical than petrol powered. The spin doctors (pollies) were determined not to lose their tax base - motorists complaining of rising costs - lets reduce the frequency of W of F ($45 saving PA) Wow, huge saving. Not only that, it doesn't affect their tax take; instead it hits all those in the business of issuing W of F's. (not me by the way)

One correction required in the article though - it states "The towing abilities are modest at only 2000kg, despite four-wheel drive and the torquey diesel engine (224Nm and 126kW)". Those are the figures for the 2.4L petrol. The diesel has 112kW and 366Nm.

Ford is planning on making the Falcon as a rebadged Taurus which is front drive in the 2014 model year.Ford should never put a FALCON badge on a front drive vehicle-give it a front drive badge like they did with the "front drive"Mustang-called it the Ford Probe while the Mustang remained rear drive!Maybe call the "front drive Falcon" the Ford Wombat!Besides, the Mustang was made as a shrunken 2 door version of the Falcon.Lets put them back together again. Here is a copy about how Ford could possibly re-merge the Falcon and Mustang again, save a lot of money, and make other vehicles off the same platforms including resurrecting other vehicles:

2 In 1 Ford-Rear Drive Version

Ford needs a global rear drive platform for full size rear drive vehicles and actually seems to already have one which would also be great for the Lincoln division too.Would eliminate developement costs.Would be great for the Australian built Falcon and Territory and update safety standards etc.

The Transit Van is to my understanding built on a a stretched Transit Connect(front drive) platform that was combined with the F-150 drivetrain (rear drive) to make a new full size van on a rear drive with optional 4WD car based platform.Combining a front drive platform with a rear drive drivetrain is what I describe as 2 drivetrains on 1 platform(because of Allan Mulally's One Ford plan of 1 platform)= 2 IN ONE FORD.
That means that the platform is size adjustable which would allow Ford to make compact (Mustang, possibly resurrected T Bird,F-100 as unibody base model version of the F-150 Pickup truck etc)to full size rear drive vehicles. Because Ford is also putting an optional diesel engine in the Transit Van,that would probably also help increase sales along with a new platform and 4wd option while still using the 2.0 litre I4 as fuel miser base engine in Falcon, new ecoboost v6, and 5.0 litre v8 engine options. The ecoboost v6 version of those vehicles get 6600 lb towing capacity.

I havent driven the ecoboost, (although have plenty of experience with the FG XR6 version) and I personally have no issues accepting it is a good drivetrain and a reasonable drive, my biggest issue is how the car feels so cheap (XR6, let alone XT) to sit in.

It just doesnt have any feel good factor - "never mind the quality, feel the width"...

Private buyers have deserted the Falcon, and surely for fleet buyers, a Camry/Aurion has just as much interior room, is far better put together from higher quality materials, and costs about the same (and no more or less bland than an XT)?

I think the Aurion has the same towing ratings as well...

Bought the LX version of this a few weeks ago. HUGELY disappointed with it. Cheap poorly fitting interior plastics which mark easily and rattle. Flawed Bluetooth connection. Is only good for answering calls, overcomplicated and dangerous to dial with. Excessive road noise, poor handling on long trips and the back (fitted with canopy) leaks like a siv. Wouldn't go near another one and wouldn't recommend one to anyone. There are much better utes on the market for the price.

I've spoken to the dealer and Holden about my concerns and got brushed off. Pretty piss poor tbh
