Why does ultra economical = ugly?

Why does ultra economical = ugly?

Why the hell do ultra economical, hybrid or hydrogen cars always have to be beaten down with the ugly stick. Is it a common belief among automakers that people who are into eco-friendly cars don’t care about how said cars look? I blame Toyota mainly, in a crazed attempt at gaining some individuality for the hybrid Prius they travelled down ugly street and set a puerile precedent.

Volvo is the latest culprit; the photo found below was included in a ‘rah-rah Volvo is greenest’ press release that passed over my desk today. These beastly examples are the ultra-economical diesels from Volvo’s current range. Letting them be just as beauty-challenged as regular Volvo models wasn’t enough, instead they had to be painted baby-puke green and be fitted with the nastiest rims known to man. However the good news is that with the money saved on gas by driving a 4.4l/100km vehicle will mean owners can save up for new wheels, paintjob and some hemp car seat covers.
