Electric cars weren’t fashionable in 1900

Today’s news on Car and SUV features a Lohner-Porsche – the first zero-emission electric car. Now, when they say ‘zero-emission’, the emissions didn’t come from the car, but this was 1900, so it came from some other inefficient way of producing the power in the first place. But that’s not the point: in 1900 electric cars just weren’t fashionable. Sure, it was a sensation at the Paris Motor Show in 1900, but it didn’t take off. Why? Because the average person couldn’t afford a car, and people in Hollywood didn’t deem it necessary to perch atop a pillar of environmental extremism in order to put positive PR spins on their careers.

In these scenarios demand must precede supply. It’s a long, expensive road to profitability when you want a new propulsion technology, and that demand has been whipped up into a frenzy by the Cameron Diaz’s of the world purchasing hybrids.
