Dumbest thing to do while driving

Dumbest thing to do while driving

I once found myself in southern Florida, USA it was a grand trip I ate a cheeseburger the size of my head, drove a under-powered Kia rental car over the seven-mile bridge (made famous by the limo exploding scene in the film True Lies), and held an alligator. But one of the less memorable moments of the trip came when I was waiting outside a restaurant and a woman started talking to me. Not too odd, well the woman was breast-feeding while making small talk to me. In foreign countries I am always a bit weary of strangers talking to me, but when a stranger with another baby-stranger attached to her breast talks to me it’s all a bit weird. I know it’s all-natural and should be encouraged for good baby growth and forming bonds etc, but it’s still weird.

What the hell has this got to do with cars, you’re probably screaming by now. Well, not much… but recently another more serious account of inappropriate breast-feeding has leaked out of the States.

The life of a mother can’t be easy with so many things to juggle, but Ohio resident Genine Compton could face up to 180 days in the slammer for her reckless brand of multi-tasking. Compton has been charged with child endangerment for breast feeding her baby while driving a car. She was taking her other children to school when the baby’s feeding time came, and since the baby was hungry, it was time to get a feed on.  It’s against Ohio law to have children in your lap in the front seat, and all children under 40 lbs must be restrained in a child safety seat. If you have ever seen or felt an airbag deploy (which can happen even in a low-speed impact), you can imagine what it could do to a baby.

I think talking on a mobile phone while driving isn’t that bad, texting while driving is fairly stupid, eating a hot mince and cheese pie while driving is reckless, but breast-feeding while driving thats just nuts. I don’t want to milk it too much but sometimes it seems that America needs to pull all its tax money out of military expenditure and pump it into the development of common sense pills.
